Flow experiences bring happiness

Since they increase the complexity of our self, fulfilling our calling as learning and growing Image bearers, we feel satisfied and happy. Enjoyment depends on increased complexity.

In an experiment researchers gave people pagers that got pinged randomly throughout the day. When pinged, the subjects wrote down what they did and their mood. Surprisingly, satisfaction and happiness was higher when working than relaxing. Because jobs resemble flow-state activities, they are easier to enjoy than free time.
