Review
Spoilers
First, the positives. What I really liked about it were the singer perspectives. Rlain and Venli’s perspectives were both really interesting. The setting of the intrigue and them finding their place was intriging. I also really liked the story around Navani and Raboniel. The intersection of intrigue, invention, collaboration and backstabbing was really intruiging.
What didn’t work so well for me were Kaladin’s and Shallan’s storylines. The struggle just felt like it dragged on and on. The writing there also seemed a bit tropey – all darkness and winds and tears. Somehow the writing wasn’t able to connect me to their emotions. It just felt tedious.
It was a bit of a bummer we got to see so little from Adolin. At the beginning of the book he went into Shadesmar and spent the rest of the 1400 pages there, removed from the action. I really enjoyed the story arc we got, albeit short. His and Maya’s bonding was touching and unique against the Radiants and their spren. The culmination with the honour spren was satisfying as well.
Dalinar also somehow both played a really important role and felt oddly sidelined. I guess this might be the price to pay for other POVs, like the listeners being explored.
In general, with this book the Sanderson-magic might have started to wear off a bit on me. After the initial awe of reading Mistborn Series and Elantris, it starts to feel a bit formulaic. Okay, Shallan and Kaladin struggle a lot. But we all know it is going to end in their epic catharsis in the end of the book.
It took me around four months (with breaks) to finish the book. That show that it didn’t quite capture me as other fantasy did this year. Still, I enjoyed spending more time in this universe. I am curious to see where it is all going.
Four out of five stars from me.
