Summary/Reflection

This book is a good overview of key Effective Altruism concepts. I stumbled upon EA first online but wish I would have read this book first. It is more approachable than some of the discussion going on in the Effective Altruism Forum.

It introduces some helpful ideas like Expected Value, Quality Adjusted Life Years and Fat-tailed distribution.

But it was also stressful to read at times. The author takes doing the most good you can very serious, and that also involves career planning. Since I started my career sort of late and don’t have a uni degree, the advice to maximise career capital gave a lot of pressure.

It also took me around a year to finish the book. It had interesting and counter-intuitive ideas but wasn’t a page turner.
